DVR - Digital Video Recording
The main thing to know about DVR in relation
to a satellite tv system is that Directv with TIVO and Dish network
with DVR (digital video recording) are basically the same thing.
The DVR feature makes it possible for you to
be able to record up to 100 hours of video to your receiver so that
you can play it back at anytime you want. With digital video recording
you can even rewind, pause or replay a live broadcast. If you are
a sports fan then you will really love this feature. It comes in
handy when there is a close call at home plate and you want to see
if the umpire got the call right. All you have to do is rewind and
then watch the play in slow motion and you can then decide if the
umpire made the right call. This certainly won't change the outcome
of the game but with your DVR technology, at least you won't have
to sit and wonder.
Digital Video Recording has made it easier than
ever to watch television. No more worrying about how to program
your VCR for that special show. This equipment goes great with all
of the new digital
satellite tv systems that are available these days. All you
have to do is instruct the DVR as to what show you want to watch
and it will record it even if the day or time is moved by the network
( In some cases this won't work when the DVR is not given enough
of a warning by the network).
If you are not a big fan of commercials then
TiVo and DVR are for you. DVR is basically a very basic computer
with a very large hard drive. It is possible for you to purchase
a digital video recorder with a wide range of recording lengths
and options. However, you do have to remember that the recording
time that is listed on the box is for the lowest setting for quality.
The better the quality you do your recording at, the fewer programs
you will be able to record. You can think of this in the same terms
thath you are used to with VHS. Sometimes there will be some programs
that you will need to record with the DVR set to the best recording
quality so that you can get the best possible results.
A big advantage of DVR over a VCR is that while
the digital video recorder is recording, you are free to watch a
different show that it had already recorded for you. In contrast,
with a VCR, you can only watch what is currently being recorded
by your satellite tv system.
One of the main complaints from people who have
had a DVR for a while and then get into a situation where they are
watching a live show, is that they can't fast forward through the
commercials. So if you've never experienced DVR then be prepared
to harbor an addiction for the technology. After you have been using
your DVR for awhile you will find that you will start watching your
programs 10-15 minutes late on purpose. This will allow you to finish
your program at about the same time as the recording. The difference
is that have not had to watch any commercials.
